Quote of the Day….

“A bicycle does get you there and more…. And there is always the thin edge of danger to keep you alert and comfortably apprehensive.  Dogs become dogs again and snap at your raincoat; potholes become personal.  And getting there is all the fun.”  ~Bill Emerson, “On Bicycling,” Saturday Evening Post, 29 July 1967

Just a quick reminder that Pryor’s premier bike event, Dam J.A.M., is next Saturday, Sept. 6.  I know for a fact that we are attracting many new riders this time, and I’m so happy about that!

If you can’t bike and would like to SAG, please contact Jim Beach.  According to Jim, “I can arrange to get you a vehicle if you don’t have one suitable for the job. We’re paying for gas. You get a free lunch, t-shirt and immeasurable satisfaction and our undying gratitude.”

Here’s the website for Dam J.A.M.

AND….don’t forget that the M.A.S.H. unit with HotLips, the Colonel, and a full compliment of “nurses” and “doctors” await you at the top of Pumpback Hill.  You can enjoy an MRE (peanut butter sandwich), a saline infusion (pickle shots) and glucose therapy (watermelon).  Plus, there’s always a stretcher if you really need it, and almost everyone who makes it up Pumpback does.

Come join the fun on Sept. 6th.

Unless your legs are broken, there’s no excuse for not getting out on the bike in the upcoming weeks.  The weather has been great, and it’s time to get ready for four local rides.  Here they are in chronological order.

Saturday, September 6    Dam J.A.M.    Pryor, OK  Whitaker Park

http://www.damjambicycletour.com/

Choose 30, 55, 71 or a Century worth of beautiful rolling hills, lakes, dams and the best rest stops you’ll ever see on any ride, ANYWHERE.  Our Chamber of Commerce and local businesses and civic groups have a reputation among bike riders in four states for more than 20 years of organizing a terrific ride.  I could be a bit partial because I done the Dam J.A.M almost every year, but after seeing other bikers proudly wear Dam J.A.M t-shirts every day of FreeWheel, and hearing their experiences, I know I’m not that jaded!

And this year you can sign up online…it’s easy….even us Pryorites have done that!

September 13-14 MS 150  Tulsa to Pryor and Return

http://bikeoke.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR/Bike/OKEBikeEvents?pg=entry&fr_id=8590&JServSessionIdr009=v31o1wejj1.app319b

This annual two-day event takes place in every state and can be ridden by a team or individual.  Sponsors and donors help teams raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  This year’s Oklahoma ride starts in Tulsa and comes to PRYOR.  In 2006 Pryor won the “Best FreeWheel Community” award and that is one of the reasons Pryor was chosen as the overnight destination for this year’s MS 150.  Participants ride to Pryor Saturday, spend the night at the beautiful Pryor Creek Recreation Center or arrange for other accommodations and return to Tulsa on Sunday.

Saturday, September 27  Tulsa Fall Century

http://web.mac.com/burleyrider/Site/Welcome.html

The Tulsa Fall Century is celebrating its 9th year, and you don’t have to ride 100 miles unless you want to!  The ride begins at the Whirlpool plant and riders choose 10, 30, 50, 62 or a Century.   Several local riders including Wayne have ridden the 100.   The 62 sounds more my speed.

Saturday, October 4   Dickens of a Ride   Claremore

Wayne, Chris and I rode Dickens last year.  We found out there are lots of hills north of Claremore.  But it was a great day and we had a very good ride.  Distances this year include 30, 50, 66 and a Century.   There’s also a “Lazy Lake Loop Fun Ride” for families.  Even though I had a flat last year, they had great door prizes.

At the website below , click on Register Now in the left corner of the “Dickens” box.  You can download a pdf file and send it in.

Get out that bicycle…immediately…the weather is cool and it’s time to ride.
